# DNB statistics (De Nederlandsche Bank)

De Nederlandsche Bank publishes figures on banks, interest rates, household savings, mortgages, payments, pension funds and insurers. On the website you view and download the tables. Part of the current tables is also available through the DNB Statistics API, with a free account and key.

## What can you do with it?
- **Savings rate versus inflation.** Put the average interest rate on household savings next to CBS inflation. You see in which years savers lost purchasing power.
- **How much do households save?.** Table 5.2.6 gives Dutch household savings at banks. The household savings dashboard also shows deposits, withdrawals and credited interest over the years.
- **Which fixed-rate period do buyers choose?.** DNB breaks down new bank mortgages by fixed-rate period. According to DNB, shorter fixed periods became more popular again in 2022 and 2023 as rates rose fast.
- **Pension fund funding ratio per month.** DNB publishes the policy funding ratio of pension funds every month. Put it next to the interest rate term structure to see how strongly rates feed through.

## How to process it
1. **Find the table.** Data zoeken lists all tables. If a table has an API tab, it is also available through the API.
2. **Check the publication calendar.** Per topic the date of the next update and the reporting period. On 15 October 2026, for example, 'Debit and credit rates of banks' for September 2026 was scheduled for 3 November.
3. **Request a key for the API.** Create a Mijn DNB account (or log in with eHerkenning), go to DNB API Services and subscribe to the Public product. Endpoints and the Starters Guide are only visible after logging in.
4. **Without a key via the ECB.** Dutch bank interest rates are also in the ECB Data Portal, with an open API. This series is the rate on new home mortgages in the Netherlands (August 2026: 3.91%).

## Interesting combinations
- Do house prices follow mortgage rates? → [cbs-statline](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/cbs-statline.md) via maand. Put the rate on new mortgages next to the CBS price index of existing owner-occupied homes, per month. Look at the lag between the two.
- How does the Dutch savings rate compare with inflation elsewhere in Europe? → [eurostat](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/eurostat.md) via maand. Eurostat has harmonised inflation per country. Subtract it from the savings rate for a real rate.

## Similar sources
- [ECB Data Portal](https://data.ecb.europa.eu): The same kind of bank and interest figures for all euro countries, with an open SDMX API without a key.
- [cbs-statline](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/cbs-statline.md): CBS looks at households themselves, for example in table 85162NED on the financial risk of mortgage debt among homeowners (2006–2024).

## What to watch out for
- **API only with an account.** The API requires a Mijn DNB account and a subscription key. As a user, DNB may contact you about changes or for feedback.
- **Not everything is in the API.** DNB adds current tables to the API in phases. Tables that are no longer updated are only on the website.
- **Banks only.** DNB doesn't collect mortgage rates from lenders other than banks, such as insurers and pension funds. Part of the market is missing from those figures.
- **Credit and note changes.** The licence is CC BY 4.0: credit DNB, name the licence and say whether you modified the data. A modification may not suggest that DNB endorses it.
- **An interest rate isn't always the same rate.** DNB distinguishes rates on new contracts from rates on existing contracts (the stock). The savings dashboard uses the average rate on existing contracts. Don't compare new with existing.

## API (REST (Azure API Management), alleen met account)

- Base: https://api.dnb.nl
- Access: A Mijn DNB account (or eHerkenning), then in DNB API Services under Products a subscription to the product Public. Under APIs you then find the DNB Statistics API with its endpoints; the Starters Guide is only visible after login. Free. (from the description)
- Formats: json
- Filtering: Not publicly described: endpoints and parameters are only in the portal after login.;

### Endpoints

### Parameters

### Limits and pitfalls
- Not publicly described. Not all tables are in the API; DNB adds them in phases, tables that are no longer updated are only on the website. (from the description)
- api.dnb.nl/ without a key returns a JSON 404 ("Resource not found"). We deliberately did not look for keys in the web pages (the Data search page uses the Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Key header). (tested)
- Open alternative without a key: DNB also reports bank interest rates and balance sheets to the ECB, and they are in the ECB Data Portal (SDMX, source ecb-data). Mortgage rate new contracts: data-api.ecb.europa.eu/service/data/MIR/M.NL.B.A2C.AM.R.A.2250.EUR.N?format=csvdata (August 2026: 3.91%); savings rate (deposits redeemable at notice): MIR/M.NL.B.L23.A.R.A.2250.EUR.N (August 2026: 1.29%). Other dataflows with NL: BSI (balance sheets), IVF (investment funds), RPP (house prices). (tested)
- The ECB's robots.txt has separate Disallow blocks for the user agents curl, Wget and python-requests: always send your own user agent. A * in the series key triggers a firewall 400. (experience)
- Licence CC BY 4.0: credit DNB, name the licence, state whether you modified the data, and no suggestion of DNB endorsement. DNB may contact API users about changes or for feedback. (from the description)
- www.dnb.nl's robots.txt only forbids search results; the statistics pages may be read. (tested)
