# AGSI+, gas storage in Europe (GIE)

AGSI+ (Aggregated Gas Storage Inventory) by Gas Infrastructure Europe shows per day how much gas is in each European country's storage sites, how much was injected and withdrawn and how full they are, also per operator. News every winter: at the end of October 2025 Dutch storage was 73.6 percent full according to CBS (based on AGSI). The website is free to view; the API needs a free personal key and attribution is mandatory.

## What can you do with it?
- **How full is the Netherlands before winter?.** Follow the fill level from 1 October to 1 November and compare with earlier years. According to CBS it was only 58 percent at the end of October 2021 and 99 percent at the end of October 2023.
- **The Netherlands among its neighbours.** AGSI gives the same figures for Germany, Belgium and the rest of Europe. Put the fill levels side by side and see who lags behind.
- **When does withdrawal start?.** The daily injection and withdrawal figures show when storage switches from filling to supplying. Put that next to the KNMI temperature.

## How to process it
1. **Look at the website first.** Charts and tables per country and per operator can be viewed without an account. For a few figures you do not need the API.
2. **Request a key.** Register for free to get a personal API key. Without a key the API replies "Invalid or missing API key".
3. **Request a country.** With the key you request daily figures per country. This is the call that returned the error without a key (16 Oct 2026); we could not inspect the fields.
4. **Or use the open CBS figure.** CBS publishes the end-of-month stock and capacity of Dutch gas storage monthly, based on AGSI. No key, as OData.
   `https://opendata.cbs.nl/ODataApi/OData/86103NED/TypedDataSet?$filter=substringof('MM10',Perioden)&$select=Perioden,EindvoorraadGasvormigAardgas_29,OpslagcapaciteitGasvormig_33&$format=json`

## Interesting combinations
- How much faster does storage empty when it freezes? → [knmi-daggegevens](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/knmi-daggegevens.md) via datum (gasdag). Put daily withdrawal next to the daily mean temperature in De Bilt. Cold days need more gas for heating.
- Does the monthly figure match the daily ones? → [cbs-statline](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/cbs-statline.md) via maand. Take the AGSI level on the last gas day of the month and compare with the end-of-month stock in 86103NED. Mind the unit: CBS counts million cubic metres; check which unit the AGSI figures use.

## Similar sources
- [cbs-statline](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/cbs-statline.md): The CBS natural gas balance (86103NED) has monthly stock and capacity for the whole Netherlands, open and without a key. No daily figures and no other countries.
- [ned-energie](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/ned-energie.md): The National Energy Dashboard shows solar and wind generation and gas use in the Netherlands, but not gas storage. It also needs a key.
- [eurostat](https://www.opendataindex.nl/en/bron/eurostat.md): Eurostat has monthly gas figures per EU country, with a delay, but no daily fill level.

## What to watch out for
- **Key and attribution required.** The API is free but only with a personal key. GIE asks you to credit GIE or AGSI and can otherwise revoke the key.
- **A subset of REMIT reports.** The figures come from the storage operators and are, according to GIE, a subset of what is reported under the European REMIT rules. Late corrections occur.
- **Fill level is not a stock for the Netherlands alone.** Gas in Dutch storage can be owned by traders from other countries and flow abroad. Full storage does not mean the gas is for Dutch households.
- **Not checked by us.** Without a key we could not check the API fields, period and units ourselves. What is said here about the API comes from the GIE website and terms.

## API (REST (JSON))

- Base: https://agsi.gie.eu/api
- Access: Register for free at agsi.gie.eu/account (name, email, company, consent to usage tracking and attribution). You get a personal key that does not expire; send it in the x-key header. Without a key: HTTP 200 with "access denied" / "Invalid or missing API key" and an empty data list. According to the manual registration is mandatory for non-data providers. (tested)
- Formats: json
- Size: 128 storage sites and groups of 72 operators in 22 countries in the EIC listing, 7 of them in the Netherlands at 5 operators (16 Oct 2026) (tested)
- Filtering: Query parameters you combine: country, then operator, then site (each level needs the ones above), plus dates.; =, from/to

### Endpoints
- `GET /api`: Daily figures per gas day for Europe (type=eu), a country, an operator or a single site: stock, injection, withdrawal, capacity, fill level. Without filters the tree as on the front page.
- `GET /api/unavailability`: Unavailability reports (planned and unplanned) per site, with the volume and injection and withdrawal capacity that is lost.
- `GET /api/about?show=listing`: EIC listing of all operators and their sites, with EIC codes, country, type and ready-made API addresses.
- `GET /api/about`: Hierarchical list of operators with logo, publication links, tariffs and sites.
- `GET /api/news`: News and service announcements (corrections, new sites, change of operator); ?url=<id> for a single item.

### Parameters
- `x-key`: Your personal API key. (from the description)
- `type`: Europe, non-EU or additional information (on /api); on unavailability Planned or Unplanned. (from the description)
- `country`: Country, e.g. nl or de. (from the description)
- `company`: Operator (EIC), only together with country; e.g. 21X000000001120V for TAQA Gas Storage. (from the description)
- `facility`: A single site (EIC), only together with country and company. (from the description)
- `date / from / to`: One gas day, or a range of gas days. Without from and to: everything since reporting began. (from the description)
- `updated`: Only records updated on or after this date; cannot be combined with another date filter. (from the description)
- `start / end / end_flag`: Only /api/unavailability: period and confirmed or estimate. (from the description)
- `page / size / reverse`: Paging: page starts at 1, size default 30 and at most 300; reverse flips the order. last_page in the response says how many pages there are. (from the description)

### Fields of /api (per the manual; numbers come as text) (11)
`gasDayStart` datum, `gasInStorage` tekst (getal), `workingGasVolume` tekst (getal), `full` tekst (getal), `injection / withdrawal / netWithdrawal` tekst (getal), `injectionCapacity / withdrawalCapacity` tekst (getal), `consumption / consumptionFull` tekst (getal), `trend` tekst (getal), `status` tekst, `updatedAt` datetime, `info` lijst

### Limits and pitfalls
- More than 60 calls per minute (per IP): a 60-second queue with 'too many requests'; keep doing it and you are blacklisted. Every page counts as a call. (from the description)
- New figures once a day, at 19:30 CET, with a second round at 23:00 for late operators. Fetching more often is pointless. (from the description)
- size at most 300 per page. (from the description)
- A missing or wrong key does not give 401 but HTTP 200 with "error": "access denied" and an empty data list. Always check the error field. (tested)
- Without a key, /api/about?show=listing (EIC listing), /api/unavailability and /api/news did return data; /api and /api/about did not. The manual still says registration is mandatory for API use. (tested)
- Numbers come as text ("65.5257") and missing values as "-". Convert them yourself. (from the description)
- History from 1 January 2011 (AGSI) or from the site's start, but not every operator delivered back to 2011; complete from REMIT reporting (7 April 2016). EIC codes can change with a new operator; old series then keep their own code (often PRIOR…). (from the description)
- Fill levels above 100% occur: the fill level uses the sellable capacity, while the technical capacity can be higher. (from the description)
- Test environment with the same data: https://agsitest.gie.eu/api. agsi.gie.eu has no robots.txt (404). (tested)
- Open alternative without a key: CBS table 86103NED (monthly natural gas balance, with end-of-month stock and capacity of Dutch storage, based on AGSI). (experience)
