Natural gas and oil reserves on the Dutch territory; national accounts

Wat erin zit
(Physical) natural gas and oil reserves consist of the quantities of natural gas and oil found in the Netherlands that are proven and commercially and socially viable to extract, plus quantities where future extraction is considered likely. Following the closure of the Groningen field in 2024, the Netherlands retains the so-called ‘small onshore gas and oil fields’ (including wells in the Wadden Sea) and fields in the North Sea.
The reserves align with the data presented in the *Annual Report on Minerals and Geothermal Energy in the Netherlands*, compiled by TNO on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK). Definitions and figures comply with the Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS) used by TNO since 2013. To ensure consistency with the conventions used in Environmental and National Accounts, the term "reserves" is used here instead of "stocks" (as used in the TNO report). Rounding differences may occur if the figures in the tables do not sum exactly to the totals.
The opening stock of the reserves is as of 1 January, and the closing balance is as of 31 December. Stocks and flows in the Statline table are measured in Sm³. In 2018 there was a significant downward re-evaluation of the Groningen field, and the field was permanently closed in 2024.
The table is part of the environmental accounts. The environmental accounts quantify the relationship between the economy and the environment. To ensure a consistent statistical description of this relationship, the environmental accounts align with the classifications and definitions used in the national accounts. Consequently, environmental figures from the environmental accounts sometimes differ from environmental figures found elsewhere on the CBS website.
